“Little girl sets off for the big world”Ilon Wikland: “When I am in Haapsalu I think more about that time. I remember little images of the time before the Russians came – the kuursaal, the promenade, the orchestra, the music, the happy people, the sea, the yachts…

It was incredibly beautiful, but was all destroyed very quickly. The Russians came, and there were deportations, then the war broke out and the Germans came.

My Haapsalu grandmother was like a fortress for me. The fact that in 1944 she sent me alone across the sea before the second arrival of the Russians…that was something big. It was so strange that my grandmother and grandfather were not coming with me. I asked why they weren’t coming and my grandmother answered ‘We are too old’.”
